Arthrolite S

The ARTHROLITE S
The Arthrolite S is a small, handheld NIR light device which is used to treat small areas of musculoskeletal discomfort
such as tennis elbow, plantar fasciitis, pain at the base of the thumbs and pain affecting the fingers. It is not effective
for the treatment of larger areas - the Arthrolite M should be used instead.
Patient expectations should be realistic as the Arthrolite S may take at least two weeks to begin to be effective.
Several weeks of twice daily treatments may be needed for full results. However, the average user can expect to feel
slight pain relief immediately after the application of the Arthrolite S

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
1. Is the Arthrolite technology safe?
Yes, the Arthrolite technology is deemed low risk for purposes of CE marking.
2. Can I overuse the Arthrolite technology?
No, you cannot overuse the Arthrolite technology.
3. Will using the Arthrolite more frequently speed the therapeutic process up?
Yes, to a slight extent: increasing the number of applications and increasing the frequency
of treatment to 4 times a day will improve efficacy.
4. What happens when I stop using the Arthrolite?
It depends upon the reason for use: if being used for wear and tear arthritis type pain
then the discomfort will recur after stopping the Arthrolite (the time interval is variable
according to the individual). If using the Arthrolite for a sports injury then, provided
there are no further injuries, the pain and discomfort should remain resolved.
5. Does the Arthrolite technology repair the cartilage?
We hypothesise that this is the case but this is the focus of on-going research. In the event
that the Arthrolite technology is proven to repair cartilage this will be a major step
forward in the treatment of degenerative joint disease.
6. Will the Arthrolite cure my arthritis?
No, but the Arthrolite will help with the pain associated with your arthritis.
7. Can I treat arthritis of the hip with the Arthrolite M or S?
Yes, but due to the depth of the hip joint below the surface of the skin it is unlikely to be
therapeutically beneficial.
8. I have back pain; can I use the Arthrolite to treat it?
Yes, but due to the depth of the inflammatory process causing the back pain it is unlikely
to be effective.

How does Arthrolite work?
As with any new technology we are not completely sure how it works,
however over the last decade we have made significant strides in
identifying the mechanism of action of the Arthrolite technology.
The hypothesis as to how the Arthrolite works is threefold.
1. There is a slight reduction in perceived pain due to the NIR light effect.
2. Superior to other NIR devices is the possibility that the Arthrolite will
repair the damaged tissue which is responsible for the pain in the first
instance.
3. Laboratory evidence suggests that the NIR light from the Arthrolite has
an anti-inflammatory effect, which will reduce swelling of the inflamed
area and hence further reduce the perceived pain. Again this is a unique
property of the patented Arthrolite technology.
One of the most important aspects of the technology is the almost
“intelligent” mode of action. We have discovered the effect upon the
target tissue is age dependent, there being differing effect according to the
age of the patient.
Bearing this in mind, the focus of ongoing research is based upon the
anecdotal observation that in young individuals with a muscle strain the
main focus of the Arthrolite treatment is pain relief, anti-inflammatory
and tissue repair. These observations are on the back of laboratory
evidence that the Arthrolite technology is cytoprotective across a range of
cell types. Penetration of the Arthrolite light to the target tissue, as with
any other therapeutic technology, delivery of the therapeutic agent to the
target tissue is crucial. The Arthrolite light emissions are of a low
intensity and non-thermal in quantity and we estimate will penetrate 1-
2cm into soft tissue and approximately 5mm into bone. When treating
those “hard to get” areas such as shoulders, it is essential the correct area
is targeted for best effect.
What can be expected when using the
Arthrolite technology?
The Arthrolite technology is not an instant cure all!
1. The Arthrolite technology needs to be used daily, preferably twice
daily.
2. The area of most tenderness needs to be targeted by the Arthrolite.
3. There will be a slight reduction in pain experienced immediately after
use.
4. In some individuals as the “repair process” is initiated there may be an
exacerbation of the pain in the area treated; the Arthrolite can be used to
alleviate this discomfort at this time.
5. The day after the first treatment is the first time that some individuals
may feel a slight improvement in the discomfort they are experiencing at
the area treated.
6. it is essential that this improvement is maintained with ongoing
treatments with the Arthrolite.
7. After approximately 14 – 28 days there should be an improvement in
the pain perceived in sporting injuries.
8. After 5-6 weeks there should be an improvement in the perceived pain
associated with chronic neck pain.
9. When treating knee pain, the Arthrolite is not powerful enough to
penetrate to the centre of the joint so will have little effect upon the pain
felt directly under the knee cap.
10. As with the knee cap, directing light to the shoulder area is difficult
for the lay person and success in the treatment of shoulder pain is not
assured.
